This blog belongs to Shar! =D

Let me introduce myself. I'm a lady who craves for a simple life, in this complicated world. I love the love that exists in this world. I smile when I experience love, I tear when I'm touched, I daydream when I'm bored. I like things simple, but also deep--the depth of things, very meaningful.

I have love and sunshine bursting out of me. :D
Believe it or not, love always wins.

    In this field of work,

I've learnt how to verbalize my own thoughts and feelings that are evoked by the former.
Sometimes, I may feel very frustrated, because of something which is bothering me, and I verbalize it out by writing or telling someone.
Sometimes, I feel angry as though it just felt that way without reason, but there is in fact a reason why I feel angry suddenly.

All these realizations, of course, have to take time and effort to go through my own thoughts and feelings. The road was an arduous one, but it has become part and parcel of my life now. Reflecting and being self-aware is a part of me which I cannot stop doing, because it makes my life more meaningful through knowing more about myself and learning how to shape myself into a better person in all aspects.

And I'm really happy to come to this realization.
Mm... yeah. <- This is how I feel.

Am I going to be Ms. Nice Social Worker everytime I meet youths?

    I don't think so.
    I feel so fake.
What's my style? I really don't know. I'm still trying to figure out through my mind of confusion.
What kind of style do I feel most comfortable and yet best to interact with the youth so that they feel comfortable to share their problems with me and at the same time I could gain respect from them without trying to win over their favour?

    Fun.
    Easy-going.
    Patient.
    Smiley.
These are all Ms. Nice Social Worker's traits.

    It's not wrong, definitely.
But I just thought that something is amiss. It's not who I feel comfortable being eventually.
Something just doesn't fit in me, somehow.

    What is it?

    Today is just so weird:

    1) Didn't have a good time at Family Day.
    2) Saw a group of adults having a really heated argument with the security guard at Aloha chalet over where to park their car
    3) Aunt's depression returned again
    4) Saw a China guy bending with weird posture, needing about 2-3 men to help him travel from a place to another. I just wonder what's wrong with him.
    5) Read about flash floods which happened yesterday. I didn't know it was so bad again: "Last year, Minister for Environment and Water Resources Yaacob Ibrahim described the flash foods at Bukit Timah as a “freak” event that happened “only once in 50 years”. We’ve now had two in barely over a week." -Yahoo! News (25 June 2010)

    What's happening around me?
    What's happening to this society?
    What's happening to the world?

Youths are playful, mischievous and fun yet mature, surprising and shocking at times.

Ever since Night Hike last weekend, they've changed so much, just within that Night Hike activity itself. I learnt how to just be by their side and not necessary talk with them when they feel low. I learnt that just being present with them can also make them feel comforted. I learnt to be patient towards them, even though they showed the annoying side of them to us. I learnt that they're so similar to everyone of us, that they also need the human touch, the love, the sense of belonging, respect, care and attention from adults and friends.

I've learnt so much, so much...
But I've still so much more to learn.
And I want to learn even more!

Today's Group Work session is the 2nd last one already. Time really flies. The way we all interacted was apparent that everyone has bonded very well so far. I felt more comfortable conversing with them, and I bet they did feel the same way with us too! Haha... I will always remember how each and every one of them laughed together, with us, with the whole group. That sight, was a very pretty and memorable sight for me. It came to me like a slow movie playing...

I was inspired by their smiles and laughters.

I've been wondering what I want to do after I graduate from NUS. I'm still unsure which part of Social Work I would want to specialise in. However, the good thing is that I know I wouldn't want to do Elderly work at all. I want to do something that makes me feel less bored or routine, such as Youth Work and programs, Youth Outreach, Family Work, Counselling and School Social Work. Is there a mixture of all of these? I wouldn't want to be fixed in any one of these. :)

    I shall explore slowly.
Maybe my lecturers will be able to answer my questions, especially since I'm going Year 3 when school reopens in August. I'm very sure they're more than willing to answer my questions about my future career. Ha!

P.S. I heard that Youth Work isn't as popular as before now, but it doesn't mean that I'd still remain in Youth Work. I need to explore further before I settle down. That's all I know what I'll do in the near future, say, next 5 years ahead.

I wish so much that I had an elder brother who could love me as much as Dad does. Whenever Dad's not around, this brother would then be by my side and listen to my problems patiently, giving me time to express myself and love me with all his heart.

In fact, I have many of such guy friends and brothers around.
Maybe it's God's blessings for me to have more of these brothers around me, instead of letting me have only one blood-related brother to myself.

6 weeks have gone by 2nd placement.

    I've grown up again! haha...

Hmm... One thing I want to figure out is how my friends and supervisor are able to see the underlying emotions of people. How is this done? I always can't seem to be sharp enough to figure out people's underlying issues and feelings, and to point it out to them.

I need to learn and brush up my attending skills. Really.

    Thinking...
-- of whether Social Work is really what I want. Yes, to a large extent. It's a very meaningful job, and I've come to a point where I don't think I love my life if I quit this work.
--of which clientele group I should work with. Not the elderly. Maybe youth work, but I'm still afraid of dealing with challenging youths, as I don't know how to respond appropriately and whether I've done it the right way. What about the other groups which I've not got exposed to, like children, disabled, families etc.? I have not decided what I really want.

Still, my 2nd placement has been going well for me. So far so good. It's fantastic! I'll never regret doing this work. :)

Learning, thinking and practising are inseparable from one another.

This is what I learnt from Confucius. :)

There's so much that I can learn from him, and today's placement work emphasized this idea even more. I went through the tape review of my first individual session with my supervisor. It felt quite awkward at the start when I had no idea how the supervision with him would turn out to be, as the initial idea of watching how I conducted the session on tape with my supervisor felt scary enough! I was very much self-conscious.

However, as the supervision session progressed, I realised that my supervisor was more concerned about my learning as usual, so I eased a little and focused on listening to my supervisor's suggestions and comments.

Even though he did provide a few compliments on areas I've done well in the session, they didn't bring my spirits up too much, when I started the day with such a heavy note--2 full hours of supervision. Furthermore, the session was pretty much serious most of the time and somehow it felt very long and draggy for me. It could most likely be some resistance on my part that further sapped away my energy. I wasn't fully prepared to accept whatever that came. I took some time to adjust and learn to slowly accept my own mistakes and learn from them gradually during the supervision session. Frankly speaking, it wasn't easy for me, especially when it comes to facing and accepting my own mistakes, at the same time seeing them beneficial and as opportunities for me to grow, both personally and professionally.

I'm still afraid to make mistakes, but at least it isn't as bad as before right now, because the environment created at my placement is very, very safe. If I don't make as much mistakes as I want to as a Student Social Worker now, it'll be too late for me to do so after this placement ends in another 5-6 weeks later. The next real practice which I can have will be the real world as an official Social Worker.

The times at placement made me feel so much more busier than before, and the many experiences which I've been through so far, I didn't get to exprience them before during my first placement at SAGE. The feelings of being a real Social Worker, the feelings of being emotionally-hurt by the youths' responses and behaviour, the feelings of being responsible for my work and actions, the feelings of achievement and success when I see the youths progressing well, the feelings of 'high' when I can engage in conversation and activities with both the youths and my colleagues...

Due to the heavy workload I have on hand, there is a need to slow down and pace myself when it comes to self-care and self-reflection. I have to constantly remind myself what purpose I have in mind when I'm doing certain things and react in certain ways to various situations. I have to constantly evaluate on my own actions at the end of each day. All these can get quite draining at times. Therefore, I've learnt that no matter what, self-care is of utmost importance! :D

So, questions that I have to always keep in mind:
    1) What is my purpose and intention of doing or reacting?
    2) What are the consequences of my actions?
    3) Have I digested what I've learnt and put them into practice?

Now it's time to sleep and recover for tomorrow's GP Session 3! Woots!!
    :D
